McLaren Officially Discontinues the MP4-12C

About two weeks ago. we reported about McLaren’s decision to pause 12C production to focus on the brand new 650S. Well, it appears that the temporary halt has just become permanent, with the British company revealing that the three-year-old 12C will no longer be built.

The move comes at no surprise, as the newly-launched 650S has proven to be quite popular with customers. Although it’s more expensive than the 12C, the new supercar will keep McLaren busy with an order bank that spans over at least six months.

Although it has stopped producing and taking orders for the MP4-12C, McLaren will continue to work on improvements for the said model. Starting June, 12C drivers will benefit from a free Technology Upgrade that includes a software update and an improved IRIS system.

First up is a new Active Aero software which will enable the car’s Airbrake to detect different driving scenarios and thus improve stability. The second upgrade included in the package is a Drag Reduction System (DRS) mode. Created to enhance high-speed aerodynamics, the DRS mode lowers the rear wing when the 12C is driven at full throttle in a straight line.

Lastly, an improved Android-based IRIS infotainment system will also come with the Technology Upgrade.

In addition, McLaren promises that the reversing camera and the DAB radio introduced on the 650S will be offered to 12C owners at “a special price.”

Video: Dubai PD's Mclaren MP4-12C

–>

Until recently, the best place to spot supercars was the principality of Monte Carlo on the southern coast of France. Dubai has, in recent years, seen a huge inflow of high-performance sports cars and exclusive hypercars.

So much so that even the local police now roam in their very own high-power crowd pullers. The Dubai police department recently acquired a McLaren MP4-12C, adding to their fleet of Mustangs, Corvettes, Mercedes, Veyrons and Lamborghinis. Just imagine cruising through your local streets and suddenly seeing a Lambo with red and blues flashing behind you – now that’s some scary stuff.

The official video confirming the McLaren MP4-12C being added to the Dubai PD’s fleet is nothing short of glamorous. We still doubt that the Dubai police force will actually use these cars, the MP4 included, for anything besides gratuitous publicity.

McLaren MP4-12C Spider Gemballa GT by Gemballa

Kirby Garlitos

Last year, German tuner, Gemballa, returned to the Geneva Motor Show with a number of aftermarket offerings, one of which was for the McLaren MP4-12C.

This year, Gemballa is headed back to Geneva, and low and behold, it has another McLaren MP4-12C that it’s bringing to the show, only this time, it’s the MP4-12C Spider.

Should anybody look for a more individual twist to the mighty British supercar, Gemballa has the answer in the form of its GT package for the 12C Spider. Just like the program for the coupe version, the 12C Spider features a carbon fiber aero kit of which the most significant components appear to be new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, new tailpipes, a logo kit and a new set of 21-inch Gemballa GForged-one wheels available in either “black magic,” “gunmetal,” or an individual color of the customer’s choosing.

Inside, the modifications aren’t all that plenty either. There’s the usual leather and Alcantara upholstery, as well as instrument dials that customers can also have customized in colors of their choice.

No performance upgrades were announced, so don’t expect to see any when the MP4-12C Spider Gemballa GT makes its debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

Should you find the program suitable to your tastes, you can pick it up for a pretty steep price of 47,166, which is about $62,000 based on current exchange rates.

New Pictures Show Underside of McLaren P1 Concept

New Pictures Show Underside of McLaren P1 Concept

We’ve already shown you an interesting video of the one-off McLaren P1 Concept being hoisted out of a Beverly Hills hotel after a private unveiling, and now new images have hit the net which show the underside of the car for the very first time.

They showcase what appears to be a completely flat underbody made entirely from carbon fiber featuring two massive rear diffuser exit ports designed to dramatically increase the car’s overall downforce.

Dirk A. Photography managed to capture the following images, and the technologically advanced underside of the McLaren P1 is only set to be one crucial aerodynamic improvement over the MP4-12C and of course the original F1.

In line with the extremely popular active aerodynamics fitted to the Pagani Huayra, the McLaren P1 is also rumoured to be receiving active aero flaps in front of the front wheels which will open and close depending on the car’s speed.

The car is set for an official debut in production form at the 2013 Geneva Motor and in the meantime, be sure to check out McLaren’s official preview of the car!

After a successful run with McLaren, Lewis Hamilton became likely the hottest free agent in recent F1 history. There was a lot of debating and speculation that Hamilton had already signed with Mercedes, who only just recently signed the Concorde Agreement after rumors that it may leave F1, and that McLaren refused to match. It looks as if all of the Hamilton-to-Mercedes rumors were true, as Mercedes has officially announced the signing of Hamilton through the 2016 season.

This signing comes on the heels of McLaren, Hamilton’s former employer, announcing that it had signed the up-and-coming Sergio Perez. An unfortunate byproduct of Mercedes bringing in this young blood means the old blood, in the form of Michael Schumacher, is out of a job. There is some speculation that Schumacher will head back into retirement, but other rumors are placing him with Sauber, taking the spot vacated by Sergio Perez’s jettison to McLaren. Ah, and the evil circle of F1 continues…

It is up for debate as to whether Mercedes or McLaren got the better end of the deal, as you have a proven talent in Hamilton who had some struggles last year. But on the other hand you have the 22-year-old Perez with an impressive three podium trips last year and is heading into the prime of his career.

Either way, both Mercedes and McLaren got their guys and both Hamilton and Perez will likely continue strong in the coming years. Also announced today by Mercedes is that 3-time F1 champ, Nikki Lauda, will join Mercedes as a non-executive chairman.
